Spotting Discord scams and fake staff
Most account theft in gaming communities does not start with hacking – it starts with a message. Someone pretending to be staff, a friend or a “giveaway bot” talks you into handing over access yourself. Here is how to see it coming.
How the trick works
- Fake staff DMs. Real staff almost never message you first asking for anything. A copied profile picture and a name like “EyE Games Admin” is trivial to fake.
- Urgency. “Your account will be banned in 10 minutes unless you verify” exists to stop you from thinking. Real moderation is never a 10-minute countdown in your DMs.
- The “verify here” link. It leads to a fake login or a QR code. Scanning a login QR code from a stranger hands them your live session.
Rules that keep you safe
- Staff will never ask for your password, your login code, or a QR-code scan. Ever.
- Check where a link really goes before clicking.
discord-nitro.giftis not Discord. - If a “friend” suddenly sends a link or asks for money, their account may be hijacked – confirm on another channel first.
- When unsure, come to the official server and ask in public. Scammers hate daylight.
